Barkway Children received by Deputy Mayor at the Hôtel de Ville in Villeneuve d’Ascq, France.

Children in Years 3 and 4 from Barkway First School spent two days in Lille and Villeneuve d’Ascq in Northern France last week. As part of a packed itinerary which began with a journey from Royston station to St Pancras for the Eurostar, the 7 pupils were invited to a reception at the Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville) in Villeneuve d’Ascq. Mme Maryvonne Giraud, Deputy Mayor (1ère Adjointe) met the children and spoke about her role and what happens at the Town Hall.

The children asked many questions and luckily their Deputy Head, Mrs Sharon Brown, who is a fluent French speaker, was on hand to translate for everyone. Refreshments were served to the party. Other activities on the visit included climbing the 400 steps of the Belfry (Beffroi) in Lille, visiting Lille Cathedral, Vieux Lille and the large Modern Art Gallery (LAM) in Villeneuve d’Ascq.

Talking about the visit, Mrs Brown explained that Barkway school teaches Modern Foreign Languages to all children from Year 1 and aims with its collaboration school Barley to achieve the Primary Languages Quality Mark to recognise the schools’ work in this important area of the curriculum.
